Like JP said last week, we three kings at PoL are doing our part to spread the competitive fire in our communities by playing in local rec leagues. JP is doing flag football, I’m playing co-ed slo-pitch softball again, and DLamp is trying his hand at adult league dodgeball.
At the start of our game last week our softball team was still undecided on a name. Last season we were “These Aren’t My Balls” and then we each had names on our jerseys like “Blue”, “Brass”, “Matzo”, “Skee”, “Schwetty” and so forth. I hope you understand the gimmick. This season a couple guys decided the team should now be named “Prison Style Bitch!” I really can’t explain the story behind it. But as you can assume, the women on the team didn’t want to wear jersey’s that said “Prison Style Bitch!” on them. I’ll get back to that in a bit.
Anyway, we got to the field and someone from the city forgot to reset the sprinklers so that they don’t come on 5 minutes before the game was supposed to start. After warming up and trying to work off four months of rust the ump came over and told us we weren’t going to be able to play because there wasn’t anyone to call our game. It goes without saying that we were all pretty pissed at the prospect of showing up for no good reason. Then, like a chubby cherub of the diamond, another ump appeared and offered to stick around to heckle us mostly, but keep score too.
Anyway, the team played pretty well. The new members of the team (three women) all did great. We beat “Shade” by 8 runs…I don’t remember what the actual score was though. I pitched a pretty good game, had two Ks and no walks. I don’t want to sound too cocky, but I drop strikes on that plate like lightning bolts from above. At the plate I was 4-4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.
In the team name department, we decided on “Sausage Kings of Chicago” and we’re just going to have the name “Froman” on the back of each jersey. SKoC beat out “Prison Style”, obviously, as well as “Crazy for Swazye” (we came up with the name before it was leaked that he’s got pancreatic cancer), “Bayside Tigers”, and “All Heart, No Sleeves” (we were going to wear sleeveless jerseys).
Anyway, it’s game 2 of the season tonight. Tonight we’re playing “The Bluth Company”. I’ll let you know about highlights later this week.
