The 1st Annual Pyle of List Awards!

June 3, 2008

Devoted readers (Hi Mom!), the time has come to celebrate Pyle of List’s first year of existence, which is an incredibly long time in blog years. We don’t pat ourselves on the back nearly enough around here, so we’re going to take this opportunity to present our best and worst of our first year for everyone to see. Feel free to submit your own favorites at tips@pyleoflist.com.

Each of our three writers are going to pick their best post, their favorite post for both of their compatriots and their own worst post of this past year. All choices will receive a Listy, which is a bronzed mold of Joey Harrington’s torso currently in production. Until the only statue of Joey Harrington that will ever be constructed is complete, we’ll use this, a picture of the only trophy Joe-Joe has ever won:

We also created a few other categories for your amusement. Without further ado, The 1st Annual Pyle of List Awards AKA the Listies!

JP

My favorite (Lunchbox): “Kill Buss”- http://pyleoflist.com/?p=58

What else can I say about this post? It’s absolutely brilliant. This post basically launched Pyle of List and we’d be nowhere without it or you. As our buddy With Malice mentioned, if there were a blog post Hall of Fame this could be a first ballot entry.

My favorite (DLamp): “A Charmed Life” (10 easiest job in sports)- http://pyleoflist.com/?p=157

I feel like this post captures all of your great qualities as a writer which includes your quick wit, distaste for soccer and the WNBA, and affinity for homoerotic pictures of athletes.

My favorite (me): “Revealed! The Secret to USC’s Success…”- http://pyleoflist.com/?p=382

I’m incredibly proud of this one. Not only is it about my alma mater, it’s my first good character or dialogue piece and one of the few things I’ve done that reflects my random sense of humor. I also love the idea of a new spin on the Ricky Rojas story.

My worst: “Chant We All Just Sing a Song”- http://pyleoflist.com/?p=262

Just re-reading this one infuriates me. The idea itself was moderately misguided, but the execution was horrible. I decided that recording all of the songs in one take, in the kitchen of my tiny one-bedroom apartment whilst my wife was asleep was the only way to go because this just had to be released to the masses ASAP. And the “chants” themselves weren’t very good. Then to top it all off, I go and drag poor DLamp into this debacle, sullying his name forever.

Favorite Lunchbox post: “I went to a Taping of American Gladiators and All I Got Was…” – Maybe this is the child in me, or maybe it’s my love for “peeking behind the curtain” in all it’s shapes and sizes, but this article was awesome for me. It also just confirmed that, if allowed, I would totally win that show! (This is of course second to the ‘Kill Buss’ post, but how fun would it be if we all picked the same thing?)

Favorite JP post: “6 Awful Athletic Prospects from Movies” – Even though my name is attached to it, this was all you. The genius behind this lead to one of the biggest articles in this site’s one year history, the Sports Movie Hall of Fame. And if I could have, I would have picked “created this site and gave me a forum to make gay athlete jokes on”.

Favorite DLamp post: “Peter King Is Racist” – Wow. Talk about hard to pick a favorite. I mean, which of your children do you love the most? Simple: the funniest one. And while this may not be the funniest one, it still holds a special place in my heart, because I know for 100% certainty that this post got forwarded to Peter King himself and made him laugh at himself. Of course, I’m also quite partial to this one, this one, and this one.

My worst: This entire series. What seemed like a great idea at the time, turned into a real chore, and something I ended up quitting on completely at the end. I feel like this was an SNL sketch: a good idea, but dragged out WAY too long. All we were missing was Jimmy Fallon laughing at himself because just so damned funny.

Lunchbox

My Favorite JP Post: My favorite post from our namesake has to be “JP’s Guide to Course Catalogs“. As a veteran RA in college, this topic was right in JP’s wheelhouse. He tried to make it a series, but like most series’ on this site it withered on the vine. But while it didn’t last long, it was still an underrated performer.

My Favorite DLamp Post: This is tough. There’s so many DLamp one-liners that always get me like when he called Jonathan Taylor Thomas “this little asshole”. I’ll put my vote in for his “Sportsman of the Queer…” post just for the title alone.

My Favorite Lunchbox Post: Nothing has yet to top Kill Buss. It was the watershed moment. But for the sake of variety I’ll choose something else. I really enjoyed writing the post about about celebrities at the valet stand. Its always fun when you can mix real-life experiences with athletes and celebrities into the blog.

My worst: I tried to pick three sleepers for last year’s college football season. I was very wrong. Wow, those picks turned out to be really awful. Just indefensible. Please accept my most sincere apologies for this load of crap. I hope you didn’t place any bets based on the info in that post.

Other awards

Best Post with a Unicorn Picture- “Fantasy” Sports? That’s the best we could do?
Another humorous one that actually made a point hadn’t been mentioned before.

Most Legitimate Attempt at real journalism- Lunchbox’s interview with Arash Markazi from Sports Illustrated. This is a legitimately great interview that will only get better as time passes. A little behind the scenes info: this story prompted Lunchbox into an IMDB pro trial in a mission to get Ted McGinley’s info for JP. Why JP didn’t do it himself is a mystery.

Best and Longest running series: DLamp’s NFL Pick ‘em w/ significant other. This also could win the award for best recurring guest award. It was simple, but consistently enjoyable. Plus it didn’t end his relationship.

Best Post about a Group Event- This one previewing our softball exploits. Believe it or not, we never actually wrote the recap. The important thing is that we had a good time and JP extended his hitless streak to 2 years (0-16 ish).

Is the Markazi interview why you get linked by SI so often?

Danny – are Lunchbox’s BJs THAT good?

    Probably and yes.
