Brett, Packers Fans….we need to talk….

Alright…here we go again. So Brett Favre is still not sure what he wants. One day he’s retired, the next he wants to return to Green Bay, day after that he wants the Packers to grant him an unconditional release, presumably so he can sign elsewhere.
On top of that you have fans rallying together, literally, behind Favre. Adam and Erick Rolfson organized a rally outside of Lambeau Field on Sunday and will continue the rallies each week until Favre is reinstated as the starting signal caller. They have even gone so far as to call for an emergency meeting of stockholders to help “control the fate of our quarterback.”
A few weeks ago I tried my best to give some advice to Shaq and Kobe so they could find some closure and move on. I again see a void of an impartial third party willing to step in and help the Packers fans and Brett make the best of this situation. I’m no mental health care professional but I’ll do my best to talk some common sense here. (See Dr. Phil, that is all you have to do to avoid 85% of the problem you get into.)

It would be an epic battle though.  The man who’s started 253 consecutive games against the Madden curse.

Brett
Brett, Brett. Where to begin. So you want to play football? You sure about that? Look you’ve given Green Bay fans along with all of us one heck of a ride. Now I realize you haven’t seen success on the team level you should have. With a career like yours you would have expected a couple more Super Bowls, right? And I sure that on the sidelines of Super Bowl XXXII as Elway finally broke through that final wall and became a champion at the end of a glorious career you hoped you could walk away on top, too. I know the thoughts of, “just one more time and if I can do it, I’ll give up.” We’ve all been there. But you need to step back and take a real look at this.

The Packers have been waiting for the final curtain call since 2005 when they drafted a hopeful starter to replace you. Aaron has had chances and looked pretty good at times. Now the team seems to have hedged their bets by drafting Brian Brohm, yet another NFL starter kind of guy.

Talk to every guy who walked away from the game, they are trying to tell you something. Every single guy who was able to leave the game on their own power has made comment over the past few weeks that each and every time training camp rolls around they feel like they have it in them to go one more season. It will never end if you don’t let it go. And this is what’s best for a team and fan base that has supported you through it all.

Go ask Troy Aikman how Dallas fans treated him when age and concussions began to creep up on him. Not that his final few seasons were his fault, the glory of the mid-90’s had worn away by then but he left the field in Texas Stadium to boo’s during his final season. And he didn’t throw an interception in overtime in the Conference Championship game at home. You and I both know that the fans of any other franchise would be vilifying you right now.

These fans have a good young team and if either of these two guys could be the future they might become a championship team again. Coming back now could stunt their progress. And those fans that love you are willing to put a 38 year old at quarterback instead of looking forward to the future, please don’t let them mortgage the future of the Packers on one more year…I promise there will always be one more year.

Rumor is the Brett had the Packers install mind control chips in those foam cheeseheads in ’98…bet they regret that now.

Packers Fan
Are you nuts?

Brett is a 38 year old with turnover issues and you’re willing to put the two young good quarterbacks on hold and wait another year to find out about the future of the team just to watch him get you to the threshold and go gunslinger on you with a foolish gamble at the wrong time and end your season in heartbreak. Wake Up.

I’m a diehard Cowboys fan and there is no coach in all of history as good as Tom Landry, as far as I’m concerned. I was 10 when Landry was fired and Jimmy Johnson took over as the coach. I fumed the Jerry would fire the only coach that ever stalked the Cowboys sideline. I thought there was still a chance the Coach Landry could get it together for one good run and go out on top. And maybe he could have. Instead Jerry brought in his old football buddy from Arkansas who in turn built a team that could be considered the best team of the Super Bowl era. (Pats fan shut it. We have 3 Super Bowls in 4 years without getting caught cheating. And we never blew it in the Super Bowl to an inferior team.) This is you Landry moment.

All your other pieces are in place for a top of the Conference team, after all you are in the NFC. You and I are the NFC fans that can look ahead and see real potential. Some other teams will always pull a Giants and sneak up and bang us over the head once in a while but we could run this thing for a few years if one of your 2 young guys is the future of your team.

But if you take Brett back this year and he doesn’t lead you to the Promised Land he’ll want to try again and again. Your 2 young quarterbacks will get frustrated and move on at some point and then when Brett leaves you’ll be all alone. And if my college years taught me anything it’s that being alone sucks.

Let him go, you’ll always have the memories…the Super Bowl championship, the league records he set, and in 5 years you can all travel down to Canton and remind everyone how ridiculous Packers fans can be about their team. Do the right thing here, say goodbye.
