Each Thursday Philguard will outline the hot and cold stories in the world of sports and beyond.
If I did anything nerdier in the early nineties than read Nintendo Power religiously, I’m not sure what it was.

And while I can’t seem to find any proof of it’s existence on the internet (which doesn’t surprise me…the internet is rarely a good place to find useless information), I seem to remember a quarter page segment of hot and cold items in the Nintendo world and sometimes beyond each month.
Seemed perfect for our little site to me.

The Hot

College Coaching Carosel
Mike Leach is being wined and dined by more suitors than Anna Kournikova at a NHL convention. Tommy Tuberville is out at Auburn. Phillip Fulmer out at Tennessee. And in the midst of it all, Charlie Weis gets another shot at South Bend after setting school records of failure over the past 2 years. Matt Millen thinks that’s ridiculous.

The NFLPA
It’s been a busy week for the players union. After losing the appeal of the suspension for the 6 players accused of taking a banned substance, the PA has filed injunctions in court to keep some players on the field. On top of all that the NFLPA has filed paperwork accusing the Giants of missusing the “non-football injury” rules in the Plaxico Burress shooting. Which proves what I’ve always said, “The NFL Players Assosication files a lot of paperwork.”

LeBron Sweepstakes talk
With basically 2 full seasons until Bron-bron becomes a free agent, ESPN has jumped all over the story. CNN’s coverage of the Presidential election doesn’t start this far out. Let me make this clear. LeBron will not stay in Cleveland past 2010. He will go to a huge market. LA, NY or Chicago. Texas, Florida and all other Midwest teams need not apply. Here’s a good rule of thumb…picture your city in a minute long LeBron/Nike ad, if you’d have trouble filling time…you ain’t getting the “King”.

The Cold

Shooting yourself in the foot
Figurative or literal. Plax shoots himself on Friday and has turned from eccentric WR into the new persona non gratis in the NFL with felony charges dogging him. Meanwhile former NY sports star Sean Avery calls the media over to his locker on Tuesday in Calgary to voice his concern for his fellow players and their love lives in a less than wholesome manner giving the NHL and the Dallas Stars reason enough to deal with Avery in any manner they see fit. The moral of these stories, if your going to piss off your boss and bosses boss…don’t carry around loaded guns. (Again figurative or literal)

The BCS
BCS pundits, stay away from Texas for a while. I say this for your own good. I understand the reasoning behind OU’s jump over a team that beat them by 10 on a neutral field, but the rest of my home state seems to think the BCS should put the best team on top. Since the Longhorns dominated the Sooners in the Red River Rivalry in October, Texans seem to feel like they’ve been hosed.

The Hot Stove
Someone pay the gas bill. The normal frenzy of money that signals the beginning of the free agency period of Baseball has not just slowed down…it’s non-exsistant. Sabathia and Manny still haven’t been snatched up. Does this have something to do with fiscal responsiblity on the part of MLB owners…no, no. I smell fear. With the economy tanking owners aren’t sure you and I will be rushing out to purchase their overpriced tickets so we can buy their overpriced beer and hot dogs. And without that revenue they might actually lose money if they pay 20 millon a year for one player, instead of just telling everyone they lose money every year.
