Every Monday, our very own DLamp will be taking a look at what just happened the day before in the NFL, and looking ahead to the Monday night game(s).
As is my MO, my Super Bowl post comes the Tuesday after the big game. Why?
Because I remember nothing after 9pm.
Needless to say, it was a great day. Lots of food, lots of drink, and lots of good folks having fun together. But it isn’t all happiness. The end of the Super Bowl means no more football until September…
Well, except for preseason games in August…and training camps in the summer…and free agency…and the draft…
Woo Hoo!
Did I bet on the game at all?
Of course. I took the Saints with a friend (bet 5 to win 7 – high roller!), missed out on my office pool, but won the pool at the party. I’m pretty sure I broke even on $1 prop bets that were made throughout the game. Won on the coin flip (heads all day!), lost on ‘first commercial won’t be a beer ad’, won on ‘Hartley’s got this one easy’, and probably lost some more along the way.
What about the commercials?
I had three friends show up on TV during the big game (one of them was at the party with me, which was pretty cool). I saw three commercials that I auditioned for and didn’t get. Boo to that. I thought some were pretty good, but the majority were sub par. And as far as the Tebow ‘pro-life’ ad…well, it looks like Brady Quinn might have some company in my ‘too easy gay joke’ bag. Staying pure for Jesus is the perfect cover up for that guy…
Did Brees deserve the MVP?
This is always what happens. There isn’t a real standout player (although Hartley hitting those field goals to keep them in the early game was pretty clutch) so everyone looks around, shrugs, and gives it to the winning QB. Did he deserve it? More so than Pey-Pey when he won his. Brees’ numbers were actually pretty good (32-39 (82%), 288 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, 114.5 passer rating) and tying the record for most completions in a SB is a good thing. Just because he didn’t Steve Young-kakke on the Colts doesn’t mean he didn’t deserve it.
What’s next?
For the NFL, a lot of financial bugaboo. We’re staring down the barrel of an uncapped year next year, and a work stoppage seems all too likely in 2011. That sucks. Can you imagine a year without football? Me neither. In order to get through it all, I’ve decided to just stick my head in the sand and enjoy it while it’s here. Here are the top off-season storylines to look forward to (non-CBA edition):
Will he or Won’t he (Part A Million) – Favre had a good (if not great) year after he thought he was done. Will he be back? Or will he retire? Or will he retire and then come back, only to retire again?
Who’s gonna draft Tebow? – The best college football player of the recent past is now kind of stuck in limbo. Everyone knows how successful he has been, but no one is sure how successful he will be at the next level. They don’t even know what position he’ll play! I hear Tebow is a total wide receiver *whispers* for penis.
Anyone coming to Los Angeles? – In these trying economic times, many teams are having trouble selling tickets. Whenever that happens, all the speculation of a move to LA starts up again. Right now, the focus in on the Jaguars. I don’t see it happening, but it’s always fun to think about having a team in my own backyard.
Well, that’s it for the Fast Five this season. Thanks so much for your readership, and I’ll see you next year. Until then…
