Yesterday, the NBA announced that Atlanta’s Jamal Crawford won the NBA’s Sixth Man Award, one of my personal favorites. Being a good sixth man is a very specific skill that very few basketball players have. You have to be totally unselfish, yet able to contribute at a moment’s notice. That also means the history of the award (since 1982) is chock full of colorful NBA characters. So, we here at Pyle of List decided to immortalize 3 of our favorite Sixth Men in list form.
Bobby Jones (1982-1983)
Jones is practically the reason the award exists. An 8-time All Defensive Team selection, his teams never missed the playoffs. In the same year he won the award, he had a seizure, fell and cut his head open on a butcher’s block, almost causing him to quit playing. By all accounts a great basketball player and an even better man.
Dell Curry (1993-1994)
The man that taught Steph Curry to shoot was (and probably still is) a master assassin in his own right. When the Hornets needed a shot in the early 90′s, they turned to Curry before LJ or ‘Zo. Extra points for the ‘stache
Detlef Schrempf (1990-1991, 1991-1992)
Fear the Flat-top! One time, I saw the lights of the Goodyear Blimp and it read Schrempf’s a pimp.
