The Spirit of the Law

The BCS will never be “right.” The only years where people have praised it for “getting it right” were years where only two undefeated teams remained at the end of the year. It doesn’t take a computer to match those two teams against each other.

This does not mean that its goal, to pair great teams against each other in bowl games, is not admirable. Yes, their goal is also motivated by the fact that better teams equals better attendance/TV ratings equals more money. But it’s something we both benefit from.

The reason this whole thing was created is that before, when seasons ended, we had even less of an idea who the best team in the nation was. Unless two undefeated teams happened to be facing each other in a bowl game because of conference affiliation, you’d still have two undefeated teams when the season ended that never got to play each other.

And that’s where my main objection for an LSU/Bama rematch in the title game comes from. When they set-up the BCS system to pair the two best teams in the country in a championship game, I don’t think they ever imagined that the two best teams would have already played each other in the regular season. But there’s nothing about that in the rules. Perhaps that will change after this year if it happens (especially if TV ratings are down), but for now, a rematch would be following the “letter of the law.” It’s just not what I think was intended.

That said, if voters honestly believe that Alabama is the second best team in the country, then they should place them there on their ballots even if they are against a rematch. I do think there are plenty of valid arguments for NOT believing that Alabama is the second best team, but most of the voters disagree with me.

Just because a rematch is not what I (or most of the country) wants doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen if it’s within the rules of the system.

Hate the BCS, not the game.
